Species and ecological processes – taxonomy and traits in the workings of nature Conference

The British Ecological Society Aquatic Group, the Linnean Society and the Freshwater Biological Association organised a one-day online event exploring links between ecology and taxonomy in the face of global change.


Both ecology and taxonomy have now been extremely influenced by the molecular and big data revolutions of the past decade, and it is fundamental to re-evaluate the relationship between the two.


The conference was very interesting, with talks from different topics (program -->).



Particularly exciting the talks by: Florian Altermatt about amphipods taxonomy and ecosystem functioning; talk by Owen Petchey about why ecologist should avoid putting things into groups and the fascinating talk from Julia Reiss about weight as an important trait of freshwater invertebrates (including zooplankton).


During the lunch break, I had the change to visit my local pond in Oxford (UK):
