On September 9th, Somerville College at the University of Oxford hosted its annual family day.
Despite the warm weather, it was heartwarming to see a large turnout of Somervillians enjoying the various activities. There were a wide range of interactive games and workshops for children, including bouncy castles, climbing walls, and a Helter Skelter.
Moreover, our event featured talks by scientists and Fellows, including myself, who discussed the research conducted at Somerville and the University of Oxford. I had the privilege of being one of the speakers, where I highlighted the critical role of plankton in our planet's ecosystem, the fast-rising threat of climate change, and shared a demonstration of zooplankton (Daphnia) under the microscope. The children were particularly enthusiastic about peering through the microscope and trying their hand at pipetting!
It was truly gratifying to witness the genuine interest of both young kids and their parents in the fields of science, plankton, and our collective efforts to safeguard our oceans and rivers from the impacts of climate change.
It was great to see young kids (and their parents too!) so interested in #science and #plankton and in what we can do to protect our #oceans and #rivers from #climatechange
